Tomorrow has arrived: Cities and autonomous vehicles

Whether we want them to be or not, autonomous vehicles (AVs) are on their way to the streets of our cities. This background report is a primer on AVs, providing an overview including key terminology, the present state of the technology, the most widely supported predictions for the future, and anticipated impacts of AVs, both immediate and long-term. Supported by the literature from academic, professional, and industry experts, this report aims to endow a working level of knowledge that will enable readers to discuss autonomous vehicles in further detail, and consider how (if necessary) they should adapt their long-term thinking.
