The future is autonomous
Autonomous vehicle technology aka “self-driving cars” is evolving at a rapid pace and there’s no doubt that the technology is here to stay. Today, more people want to use this technology than ever before. In a survey conducted in 2017, only 44% of the adult US population wanted any sort of technology to assist in driving the vehicle, this number has increased to close to 70% in a survey conducted in 2021. However, there is a need to dig deeper into the numbers. Out of the 70% of people who like to see and use technology “assisting” the driver to safely drive the vehicle, the majority of these people are still struggling to “warm up to the idea of full autonomy”. The survey found that only 14% of the drivers interviewed in the survey said that they would be able to trust a vehicle that drives by itself. That means 86% of the total people interviewed in the survey were either not comfortable with the idea or were unsure. The survey was surprising to me, one, because of the recent hype media has created around full autonomy and two, because the limitations of the technology is grossly underreported and underestimated.
