Grappling with risk-o-meters for self-driving cars
You are a finely tuned risk calculator. That’s right, when you are driving a car you are in real-time having to figure out the risks of that pedestrian suddenly darting into the street, or the car ahead of you unexpectedly slamming on its brakes, or having to ascertain the odds that the cute kitty cat at the corner might inexplicably wander into the roadway in front of your car (don’t hit the feline, please!). What makes this a particularly hard-mental exercise is that you are trying to predict the future.
