Chris Urmson Is a Trailblazing Technologist of the Self-Driving Car

“We kind of made up that term when we were at Google,” Urmson said of the self-driving moniker. “We were thinking about how to explain this to the public, and ‘autonomous vehicle’ is not quite right, because autonomous means independent thought, free will, and whatnot. You don’t really want a car that’s going to go where it wants. You want a car that’s going to go where you’d like it to go. And ‘self-driving’ sounded friendly and approachable compared to automated vehicles.”
