AI’s most important impact on transportation this decade will be modernizing public transportation, not transforming private cars
Auto manufacturers envision a future in which individuals are shepherded around in autonomous vehicles, watching Netflix or reading a book while their private car does the heavy lifting taking them from point A to point B. As exciting as that scenario is, it has become increasingly clear over the past few years that the technological hurdles for implementing L4+ ADAS in urban areas are greater than auto manufacturers’ initially appreciated and that the costs to both auto manufacturers and consumers to bring this vision to life are prohibitive over the medium-term.
