Driverless cars reach commercial milestone on long road to future

The tech future often arrives fitfully. Something that seemed years away suddenly looms into view — only for it to be revealed as an optical illusion, with the more lasting breakthroughs still far off. Driverless cars are a case in point. There have been plenty of indications that the autonomous future is nearly here. But some of the hardest problems have yet to be solved.
