Tokyo Olympics to coincide with biggest self-driving demonstration in history
Backed by full government and academia support, Japan’s car industry is preparing for what will be the biggest, most comprehensive autonomous driving demonstration in history.
Set to take place in early July, just two weeks before the Tokyo Olympics begin this year, the multi-manufacturer, multi-government agency group called SIP (Strategic Innovation Promotion Program) will produce and permit some 80 self-driving vehicles, including buses, minivans, SUVs and sedans to drive on specially prepared roads from Haneda Airport (the closest international airport to Tokyo) to the Olympic village and strategic routes around Olympic venues in Tokyo.
